Overview

Cedar was an integrated Electronic Health Record platform supporting the complete patient journey (registration, scheduling, clinical documentation, and billing & revenue cycle management) from a single system. I held product-ownership responsibilities across 4+ hospital systems.

02

Problem

Clinical documentation often lacked the structured information required for accurate coding, so billing teams spent considerable effort correcting incomplete records before claims could be submitted. Complex interfaces required duplicate data entry, interoperability between systems was limited, and workflow changes depended on technical teams. The underlying challenge was clear: improving downstream financial outcomes required improving upstream data quality and workflow design.

03

Product Prioritization

Roadmap decisions balanced customer value, business value, technical feasibility, regulatory requirements and implementation effort. High-priority initiatives included:

  • Claims workflow optimization and billing automation.
  • Medical coding improvements and workflow standardization.
  • UI simplification and interoperability enhancements.
04

Healthcare Compliance Strategy

Compliance was treated as a product capability, not a regulatory checklist. HIPAA workflows supported secure PHI handling, role-based access control, auditability and privacy-first UX, while HL7 and FHIR R4 enabled consistent healthcare data exchange.

05

Execution

My responsibilities spanned the full product-ownership lifecycle:

  • Product roadmap planning, user stories, PRDs and acceptance criteria.
  • Sprint planning, backlog prioritization, stakeholder workshops and UAT coordination.
  • Integrated ICD-10, CPT, NDC and HCPCS billing standards for claims accuracy.
  • Partnered with Digital and Product Marketing to support launches and adoption.

Reflection

Although my title was Senior Business Analyst, my responsibilities extended well beyond traditional analysis into product ownership. The clearest takeaway: in regulated healthcare, treating compliance and data quality as core product capabilities, not afterthoughts, is what unlocks downstream financial and clinical outcomes.
